Tuesday was a tragic day due to the accident that left 2 dead after a World War 2 tank exploded. The tank was inside of a firing range located in Oregon. The explosion is no longer a risk to the public, said authorities.
It seems that the tank that caused the entire disaster was located in the close proximity of the Shooting Sports Association in Central Oregon. This place is a gun collection which is open to the public and located in Bend, a region from the Deschutes County, at 140 miles southeast from the state capital of Salem.
The State Police and Bend Fire Department arrived on the scene as quickly as possible a little around 3 PM local time. They tried to revive the two people that were injured but to no avail. Both of them would later die from all of their tragic injuries.
Local authorities are still not sure what actually caused this accident. Their best estimation is that the people were trying to fire the tank. Unluckily for them we are talking about a 70 year old tank so surprisingly enough the tank was probably not fully functional anymore. The gun that the tank fires could have been faulty which might lead to a potentially deadly explosion.
Detectives from the sheriff’s office in Oregon were there at the scene in an attempt to find out more about the incident. The director for COSSA, Bill Lewis, told the press that his only information for now is that there was an incident which ended in casualties. He has no further information for the moment.
Apparently this particular gun range was also being used by local police forces. They would train regularly on this gun range which makes the incident even more curious. Until police investigate the area in detail we won’t know for sure what the cause of the incident was after all.
