45-foot long whale, weighing 40-ton, rescued from fishing line in Hawaii

It would surely be a unique and amazing experience for all those who recently visited off the Hawaii coast where a 40-ton aquatic life was found caught as a single catch in the fishing lines here.

The West Hawaii Marine Mammal Response Network members spotted a giant humpback whale stuck into a tangle of fishing lines off the Hawaii coast and rushed into actions to free the adult mammal.

Many of the members, who worked quickly and carefully to free the mammal, had just completed their refresher training two days before when the spotted the massive aquatic creature.

The rescue efforts of the 45-foot-long whale started the same day when it was spotted.

According to the observers, the giant whale had likely spent at least the good part of a week while struggling for its freedom.

It was really tough for the rescuers as well as the whale itself to free from the clutches of the synthetic line as the tale of the giant mammal was found wrapped around several times with the synthetic line. The whale’s unavoidable condition forced it to primarily rely upon its flippers for swimming.

Still six feet of line is found embedded in the wound. The experts, however, are of the opinion that rest of the fragment should fall out over time on its own.

Ed Lyman, response coordinator for a large whale entanglement, said that the whale still has a greater chance of survival and the mammal is expected to return back to its normal life soon.

“The fact that the lines are gone now is a positive sign and I think her health is still good.  In this case I believe the animal has a very good chance of surviving… it’s ordeal,” said Lyman.

In the previous rescue attempts, the marine experts had attached a tag to the whale for tracking its movement and position with the help of satellites.
