Reports emerged late last week that Amazon is seeking the FCC’s approval so as to carry several wireless tests in Washington but offers no explicit reason.
Recent reports have shown Amazon’s innovative ideas. They range from airborne deposit patent requests to an FCC application. Reports about the latter first appeared last Saturday.
Amazon applied for a permit from the FCC. This is the Federal Communications Commission. The original application was revealed earlier this week by a media report. It was seen to request a wireless tests approval.
Amazon applied for a Special Temporary Authority. These experimental tests will be carried out over a 5-months period. During the period, Amazon requested as follows. It asked to operate on some mobile bands and also on selected channels.
The news about the wireless tests have caused quite an upstir. Some have even gone to theorize that Amazon might be releasing a new product. More exactly, an Amazon Alexa smartphone. They base these claims on the use of mobile bands.
Amazon’s wireless tests have been “respectfully requested”. They ask for this experimental special authority or STA. This would allow them to test and evaluate its prototype equipment. It would also test the associated software. Their reliability and performance would be analyzed.
The associated software was designed in order support some needs. These are innovative communications functionalities and capabilities.
As some point out, the mobile bands are quite explicitly requested in the application. They will also be in quite a large amount. Still, the application details did point out a fact. The wireless tests will only be using some of their channels.
Amazon also asked for an additional fact. It requested the “evaluation of a variety of antenna”. Their heights and also orientation would be analyzed.
As it is well known, antennas are frequently used in the smartphone area. They can help receive different signal types. These include mobile data, Wi-Fi, and even Bluetooth.
Amazon left out some details. For example, it did not mention the name of its equipment’s manufacturer. Still, it did offer other facts. For example, it will be using a fixed number of mobile units. Each location will feature the use of 10 such units.
The mention of the prototype equipment has raised everyone’s interest. As mentioned, some believe it to be a smartphone. And the theory is not really far-fetched.
Amazon already developed most of the needed technology. The company has developed its own Android-powered tablets. It also has its own voice assistant. Amazon Alexa is already available on a number of device types. These include the company products. And it is also available on third-party devices.
As such, Amazon seems to already have the software knowledge. It would have to work on its hardware parts. And these wireless tests could offer such a chance.
Still, an official report is not really expected to emerge very soon. It will probably come after Amazon will be ready to showcase its new technology. And this will take some time. At least five months will have to pass. And these will depend on the moment when the FCC will grant its approval.
If granted, these tests will take place in Washington state. More exactly, in Seattle and Kennewick.
