The U.S. government report reveals that about 75 percent of the American adults’ hearts are older than their body. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention managed to evaluate how old people’s heart were by looking at various factors such as obesity, blood pressure, diabetes or their smoking habits. The numbers were then analyzed in comparison with the average ages the people had.
For American men, their heart was almost eight years older than they were, while for women it was about five years and a half older.
Experts say that these findings are quite worrying because an older heart leads to a higher risk of suffering a heart attack or a stroke.
“This is alarming. Heart disease is the nation’s number one killer. But the bottom line is you can do some very simple things” to have a younger heart, said the lead author of the report, CDC scientists Quanhe Yang.
It is important to note that 25 percent deaths are caused by heart disease in the United States every year, making it the leading cause of death in America. Usually people suffer from heart attacks after they turn 60, but now it has been reported that people can be affected by it at a much younger age.
Nowadays, thanks to the treatment available and to some preventive measures that people can take, the rates have slightly gone down. There are numerous drugstores sold all over the United States that help reduce cholesterol and control blood pressure.
However, people are also advised to have a healthier lifestyle, to lose weight and stop smoking, to have a better diet and stress management.
In 2012, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have launched a campaign called “Million Hearts”. Their aim was to prevent one million strokes and heart attacks by the end of 2017.
The report conducted by the CDC was released on Tuesday, the 1st of September.
