For years, scientists have been focusing on creating an “exercise pill” that could mimic the advantages of intense training sessions. We all know that sports and physical activity are great for our health, but the organic processes beyond the apparent benefits of weight-loss and building muscles have been somewhat unclear.
Now, a new study shows how a short and strenuous workout results in a flowing sequence of over 1,000 metabolic changes. They affect everything from metabolic rate to the levels of insulin in our blood. Experts said that this information offers a “blueprint” for creating a revolutionary pill, which can simulate the effects of intense sports activities.
In two documents released on October 2, scientists suggested that the time when we will “train” by simply taking a medication instead of working out in the gym might not be so far away, as many believe.
The advantages of fresh vegetables and fruits are far bigger than those offered by supplement tablets. However, there is a segment of individuals for which a certain type of medication is the only choice. This can be said of workouts that are not suited for amputees, heart stroke sufferers and others who cannot train or perform an intense activity due to different reasons.
Researchers wanted to be very clear in their statement that the new pill is not a substitute for a scheduled workout. Physical exercise increases the heart rate, makes blood to circulate faster and there are a number of other effects that just cannot be obtained with an exercise pill. But, for particular categories of people, this is the next best solution.
The metabolic rate research included the examination of individual muscular biopsies from a few healthy and young subjects after they performed a high-intensity training session for half an hour. Using spectrometry methods, the scientists noticed that the workout activated more than 1,000 processes in the human body. Almost no one of these changes had been formerly associated with training.
Australian researchers, together with Danish experts, evaluated samples from untrained and healthy men after half an hour of intense physical training. Using a method known as spectrometry to observe a process called phosphorylation, the study authors found that brief and intense workouts activated more than 1,000 organic changes.
Most conventional medication focuses on individual symptoms associated with illnesses. The experts said that the conclusion of their study is that a workout medicine will have to be further analyzed to produce so many effects at the same time.
