A study that was recently published in this month’s issue of the Astrophysical Journal reveals that the brightest galaxy in the universe was recently discovered by astrophysicists. Its name is “WISE J224607.57-052635.0” and it is more luminous than 300 trillion suns.
This new discovery is invaluable, as it provides data for astrophysicists to discover many other things related to the universe.
The galaxy is 12.5 billion light years away from our planet. Scientists think that an explanation for such luminosity resides in the fact that there is an enormous black hole in the middle of the galaxy. Such immense creations prevent any galactic material from escaping it, including light, due to the enormous force they have.
“Supermassive black holes draw gas and matter into a disk around them, heating the disk to roaring temperatures of millions of degrees and blasting out high-energy, visible, ultraviolet and X-ray light,” NASA experts stated, trying to explain why the galaxy is so bright.
Astrophysicists are able to see this structure as it was 12.5 billion years ago because the light has travelled that period of time to get to us.
NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) researchers think that such a massive hole in cosmos is very unusual, even if it is not the first time a black hole has been discovered.
Therefore, this structure poses a lot of questions regarding the short period of time in which it was created. Thus, astrophysicists are likely to spend quite a while to determine how this was possible.
The galaxy was detected by using NASA’s Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) spacecraft, which also gave its name. Nineteen other luminous galaxies were found along with this one.
The spacecraft discovered WISE J224607.57-052635.0 by detecting the infrared radiation emitted from its very core. The gas surrounding it became hotter, enabling WISE to identify it.
Such discoveries point to how little is known about the universe and how much is still out there. Moreover, the new discovery could change many of the things that were thought to be true until now.
