Cat persons are sometimes perceived as introverted and cold. This picture is based on their affinity for a house pet that shows few signs of love for their masters. Cats listen to no one, show no remorse after they did something wrong, they don’t come when they are called, and they won’t refrain from scratching when something is not to their liking. However, science might have just proved that this description is all part of a big misconception.
Cat Persons Are Right to Consider their Pets as Friends
The domestic cat did not manage to forget its origins, unlike dogs. The feline is still haunted by the worries of its past life when it had to hide in narrow shelters (which is why they like cardboard boxes so much), and they are always vigilant about possible dangers (which is why they always look scared whenever there is a louder sound in the background). This attitude won the cat over the attribute of a colder and more distant pet than a dog.
A new study conducted by a team of scientists at the Oregon State University appeared in the journal Behavioural Processes. The findings of the research paper indicate that cats are just a misunderstood fury species. Despite their numerous, daily mood swings that nobody seems capable of explaining, they are actually friendly creatures that enjoy the presence of humans.
Scientists Urge People to Pay Attention to the Feline Subtilities
Scientists selected 50 cats for their experiment. They were a mixture of pets and stray members of the feline species. The study had four trials. In each of them, scientists deprived the cat of each of the four main stimuli. These were scent, toy, food, and human presence.
The second stage in their experiment was for scientists to offer the cats a choice. They had the chance to interact with their favorite stimulus. In almost all cases, the furry creatures chose humans. The most astounding part is that they neglected food to the pleasure of staying with their humans. The conclusion is that cats are capable of great socio-cognitive skills. However, they react differently than other pets. It is important to pay attention to domestic cats and understand the subtilities through which they communicate us their desires.
“Nonetheless, it is still common belief that cats are not especially sociable or trainable. This disconnect may be due, in part, to a lack of knowledge of what stimuli cats prefer, and thus may be most motivated to work for.”
