Dylann Roof (21) killed nine people in a mass murder at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. The incident took place on Wednesday night. Before starting the church massacre Roof stood with the members of the Bible study group and even prayed together with them.
According to a friend of Roof’s the suspect complained that black people were taking over the world and white people should do something about it. Eight people died in the church and one at the hospital. The group consisted of six men and three women and their ages ranged from 26 to 87. Rev. Clementa Pinckney was among them.
Joey Meek, Roof’s childhood friend, was the one who recognized him in the surveillance footage and called the FBI. He immediately knew it was him after the shirt Roof was wearing. It was the same shirt he had worn at Meek’s house the morning of the attack.
According to his friend Roof had used his birthday money to buy a Glock gun. When the two of them were out for a couple of drinks Rook confessed that he had a plan regarding black people. However he did not mention anything about a church massacre so Meek did not know what his intentions were.
As the surveillance video show, Roof arrived after 8 PM, when Rev. Pinckney and a small group were holding a Bible study session. He asked for the pastor and sat next to him during the Bible study. He listened to what they were discussing about Scripture, but he soon started to disagree with them. An hour after his arrival Roof took out the gun.
A woman tried to call him down, telling him that he does not have to do that. However the gunman said that he does because black people are raping white women and are taking over the country. He pointed his gun at the oldest person in the room (87-year-year Susie Jackson). Mr. Sanders told Roof to direct the gun at him instead, but the murderer replied that there is no point in doing so because he was going to kill everybody anyway.
At 10:43 AM Shelby police arrived in Charleston and arrested Roof. On Thursday evening he was taken to Shout Carolina and at 7:25 PM went into Charleston County’s jail. The gunman’s previous records show that in the past he was charged with trespassing and drug misdemeanor. It seems that he was familiar to the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery.
