It’s not hard to cut back on wasting food. All we need to do is change some misguided perceptions and habits that we have developed and the effects will be visible.
We are forced to live our lives at a very fast pace, and we are always trying to find time saving measures to make out free time last longer, because there in most cases isn’t much of it to begin with. This influences pretty much everything we do, including how we eat.
And yes, we want to skip making food so that we gain some time. And there are plenty of options for us out there, ranging from the infamous but delicious fast food to frozen TV diners, to any type of restaurant you might be able to think of. However, it happens all too often that we order more that we are actually capable of eating. In certain circles it is even considered impolite to eat absolutely everything on your plate.
But if you think about it, it is a perfect way for us to pay our respects to the people who cooked the food, to those who made the food and everything and everybody who has worked along the production chain so that we may get that food. But who has time to think about that? And getting a doggie bag might be interpreted as greed or something a fat person would do.
Nowadays, being fat is a very complicated situation to be in because it’s almost considered a crime. And so, people eat less and leave more than half of the food on their plates. Or they develop eating disorders. Both bulimics and anorexics have to keep up the appearance of being normal and so they order food that they cut and play with and just keep everybody else concentrated on something else than the fact that they have not eaten. And the food gets tossed away.
But many more other people, that are free from any kind of eating disorders, leave their plates half full all the time. This happens because people don’t have time to think about what it means if they do so.
Nobody has time to think about the fact that Americans toss tons and tons of food in the bin every year, for which they have payed with millions and millions of dollars and that it will take quite a few other million of dollars to manage the tons and tons of garbage. Furthermore, the garbage and its management process affect the environment, and then it all comes back to the people, because the environment affects them, and quite heavily at that.
And one of the simple things that everybody could do to reduce the massive proportions of this issue is to take a minute to really think about how much they intend to eat and then order or cook the appropriate amount of food for their wishes. If this entire vicious circle that starts forming when people disregard their appetites is of no interest to you, at lest think about the fact that it is much cheaper.
By planning out meals when we cook at home, we can considerably reduce the amount of food that gets tossed away. On the other hand, when we buy our food, we need to stick to a plan and try to get food for a few days, rather than the entire week. This way, we could cut down on the food that goes bad in our own refrigerators.
Moreover, it is extremely important that we know that the expiration dates on the labels of our food are a recommendation and that they are mainly addressed to those who sell the food, because they are compelled to keep their products at a certain level of quality. But when you find that your food is one day passed its expiration date, you shouldn’t just throw it away. At least analyze it first.
Obviously, eating food that has gone bad is not advisable because it could lead to serious medical issues. However, when you but food that is sold in a container, that is sealed in and you store it accordingly, as written on the label, you definitely get a few more days after the expiration dates.
As for the fruit and vegetables, when they stay in the fridge for too long, they start looking less delicious and they even start to go bad in certain parts. But this doesn’t mean that there is nothing left for you to do with them. For instance, you cold use the ingredients for a salad that are not so fresh anymore and make a sauce. Chop off the bad parts on the tomatoes and peppers and onions and they are perfect for a delicious sauce.
All you need to too is chop the remaining good parts of the vegetables, put them in pan with a little bit of oil, stir stir stir, add some salt, some pepper and other aromatic herbs and a bit of water so that is doesn’t get burnt and that’s it. You have a delicious sauce that you could use for pasta or rice.
By being more attentive about what we eat, when we eat it and how much of it we actually eat we could reduce the immense amount of food that is thrown away every day. And if we send off a good start for that vicious circle, this time it could bring back good things to us.
