There are almost three hundred million people suffering from diabetes worldwide. When a person is diagnosed with the disease, it is of utmost importance for him or her to lose weight in order to stay healthy.
Now it seems a solution for that will be available in drugstores. Experts say that high doses of liraglutide, a diabetes drug, can also help people with diabetes lose weight.
The experiment that was funded by Novo Nordisk, an important drug maker, showed that people who took three milligrams of this drug for about six months and a half lost about 6 percent of their total body weight.
The trial involved almost 850 obese people who also suffered from type 2 diabetes. Some of them were prescribed a daily dose of 3 milligrams of liraglutide, others a 1.8 milligrams dose of the same drug and others a placebo.
The results showed that about 54 percent of those who took the daily dose of 3 milligrams of liraglutide a day lost at least 5 percent of their body weight, while about 40 percent of those who took the lower dose and 21 percent of those who took a placebo managed to lose about 5 percent of their total body mass.
More than 25 percent of those who took the 3 milligrams dose lost more than 10 percent of their weight, compared to 16 percent of the patients on the lower dose and 7 percent of the people on placebo drugs. All these people were also on a diet and increased the amount of exercise they did every day.
“This is the first study specifically designed to investigate the efficacy of liraglutide for weight management in patients with type 2 diabetes at a dose of 3 mg, and not surprisingly was found to be effective and tolerated for weight loss,” said Dr. Joel Zonszein, who is the director of the Clinical Diabetes Center at Montefiore Medical Center in New York.
The high dose of liraglutide is known under the name of Saxenda, while the lower dose, of 1.8 milligrams, that is used for the treatment of diabetes (type 2) is known under the name of Victoza.
Hopefully clinicians will be able to prescribe the high dose of liraglutide to help obese patients who have diabetes lose weight.
The results of the study were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
