You may want to build muscle and look good for whatever reason. But if you are passionate about going to the gym you should be careful. According to a recent study, you can even die if you exercise too much. The Mayo Clinic Proceedings journal published this study.
A team of Chicago researchers has conducted this study which claims that white men who prefer to work out at least seven and a half hours per week are about two times more likely to end up developing heart disease. This is in comparison with those people who only work out for a moderate amount of time.
Too much exercise can indeed kill you!
In order to reach this conclusion, the team of experts used some exercise patterns for 25 years. Then, they compared them with each other. The results they got were staggering and unexpected. Apparently, white men who work out regularly are far more likely (about 86% more) to have more plaque building up in their arteries. And this is only by the time they reach middle age.
However, it’s very interesting that this phenomenon doesn’t happen in black men too. Also, previous studies have talked about the increased risk of stress in the arteries caused by intensive exercise. This usually leads to a much higher level of calcification of the arteries.
Still, this doesn’t mean that people should completely stop exercising. According to Deepika Laddu from the UIC College of Applied Health Sciences, everyone expected to see a smaller amount of plaque in the arteries of active people. However, surprisingly, this is not the case at all. And it’s also a mystery why black men are not affected by this.
Laddu also said that this intriguing difference could be the subject of future research. Also, this shouldn’t stop people from going to the gym and keeping in shape. It’s very important to have a healthy lifestyle, and being active is part of the process.
