Because the summer announced more passengers than ever, companies are already thinking of ways to make more seats available without having to change the airplane too much and maybe make more money as well.
This will definitely not be very good news for all those people who are used to flying with budget airlines because that is exactly where the changes might be made.
A new airline proposes to do just that by adding extra seats that face one another. Obviously, the passengers will also have the chance to stare at each other during the flight.
It was Zodiac Seats France that came with the idea, but many other companies might be on board with it soon. The company said it would be very useful if seats alternated forward and backward, thus having the airline’s customers facing each other.
It seems that the company has already filed a patent application to the World Intellectual Property Organization, earlier this year. However, the new seating plan was only revealed a month ago.
The passengers who usually go on business class needn’t worry about such changes because they are only designed for the economy class called Economy Class Cabin Hexagon.
Representatives of Zodiac Seats France explained that the name of their Economy Class derives from the hexagonal shape of the seats, especially when viewed from an upper angle.
While the ordinary passengers might be misled into thinking this unconventional seating design is meant to give them more room to extend their legs, which is usually a huge problem in cramped airplanes, they could not be more wrong. The company explained that the new seating design would allow more room for shoulders and arms.
However, the biggest benefit would not necessary be for the passengers, but for the airline, which could have the chance to create more seats on the plane.
The company expressed this goal openly:
“There is a desire to increase the number of seats within a given space to optimize the number of passengers being transported at any given time. By increasing the number of seats in the space, the amount of space available for each passenger is diminished,” they explained.
Therefore, there are apparently no perks for the passengers at all. The only thing this change could bring them is a heightened sense of awkwardness at having to face two complete strangers during a long flight.
Even if it sounds like a good idea for the company, their plan is not likely to be put into practice just yet because there are many things to consider. Before it becomes reality, there are a few tests that the new seating plan would have to pass, such as the passengers’ ability to evacuate within the shortest time span possible and other crash tests.
The idea of making more room for as many seats as possible is not completely new, as there have been suggestions from other companies as well. One of them was Ryanair, which suggested standing seats. At the time, they argued that it would be great for passengers as well, because they could benefit from lower fares.
