Cats are known for being a great pet because they are offering us cuddles and they keep the bugs and mice away from the house. Although most of the cats are predators some house cats tend to be gentler. This is not the case for feral cats. These animals are great hunters and now they are becoming a threat to the wildlife in Australia.
The feral cats have managed to spread all across Australia covering 99.8% of the continent. Although they might look and act like normal house pets they are actually harmful to the biodiversity. They managed to kill many species of small animals.
Australian conservationists have been trying for years to find a way to handle the problem of the feral cat population. This is because the problem is getting bigger and bigger due to the increasing population. These cats are great predators and this is why the conservationists try to save the small animals and birds that are a great prey for the cats.
The feral cat population has reached concerning numbers. In some area, there are more than 6.3 million cats. This means that there is at least 1 cat for every square mile. That 0.2% of the territory that “cat-free” was hard to obtain.
Only after installing expensive fences the cats were removed from those areas. The problem is that the cats can’t be kept away for too long and they continue to reproduce. This is why their number is increasing. They tend to live in areas where they are able to hunt.
If nobody takes action soon enough most of the small animals and bird will be extinct because the cats can’t be stopped from hunting. In some areas, the cats are not permitted to get out of the house. The owners are advised to keep their animals inside the house so that they won’t hunt anymore.
The government officials mentioned that these animals tend to be very destructive despite the fact that they seem like cute little pets. The conservationists believe that the only way to solve this problem is to cull the feral cats before it is too late for the wildlife.
