Fish oil has been long debated regarding its health benefits. While some experts say that fish oil supplements have no impact on people’s health, others calim that they are very useful, especially when people want to improve their memory, their heart and eyesight.
A new study conducted by experts from the University of Gothenburg reveals that a diet that is rich in fish oil is very helpful, as it has multiple benefits on your body weight. It was proved that people who consume a lot of fish oil are much fitter because the supplement helps metabolize the glucose by producing gut bacteria that is very good for the body.
“We wanted to determine whether gut microbes directly contribute to the metabolic differences associated with diets rich in healthy and unhealthy fats. Our goal is to identify interventions for optimizing metabolic health in humans,” said lead study author Robert Caesar.
The study was carried out on mice in a lab. The researchers fed mice with either lard or fish for almost three months and monitored them to see what their metabolism looked like.
Animal fat favors the growth of bacteria which leads to gut inflammation. However, while the diet based on lard led to the growth of a bacteria called BIlophila, which could result in gut inflammation, the diet rich in fish oil promoted the growth of Akkermansia muciniphila, which is a bacteria that is known to prevent weight gain. Moreover, it led to a better glucose metabolism in the tested mice.
Fredrick Backhed, who is a senior study author and researcher at the University of Gothenburg, said that the results were quite surprising, given the fact that lard and fish oil have similar energy content and about the same amount of fiber.
Even if these are the main sources for gut bacteria, they led to very distinct macrobiota communities, which, taken separately, have different impact on human health.
Fish oil is either obtained by eating fish that is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as tuna, salmon, mackerel, sturgeon, sardines, herring and others, or by taking supplements.
Some of the benefits of fish oil include lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol. It is also associated with lower chances of developing heart disease, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and macular disease.
The results of the study were published in the journal Cell Metabolism
