For more than six years, a woman believed she had Crohn’s disease as she presented symptoms similar to the ones from this condition. However, when doctors studied the problem once again, they were amazed to find a Heinz packet in her intestine. A small piece of the packet had been causing these issues for years but had remained undetected until now.
The Heinz Packet that Started it All
The woman was 41 years old and complained of bloating and abdominal pain. At first, it was believed that she suffered from Crohn’s disease. Doctors monitored the condition and gave her the standard medicine for it. However, the women’s symptoms became so severe that doctors needed to perform keyhole surgery.
In doing so, they stumbled upon the real cause of the all the problems, one that rather amazed them. During surgery, the doctors noticed an inflammatory mass. As it turned out, this was actually a piece of a Heinz packet. This is the first time a plastic container mimics Crohn’s disease symptoms.
The woman made a quick recovery after the surgery. All of the symptoms disappeared within five months. Since then, she remained in good health.
While this could be shocking, it is not the first case of Crohn’s disease symptoms caused by a foreign object stuck in the intestine. A man which presented the same problems turned out to have a toothpick in his intestine.
