With the help of some researchers huge ancient carnivores have been uncovered. Thousands of years ago the ecosystem was an entirely different place. Huge herbivores lived at that time and they could consume entire forests if their population went unchecked. That is the main reason why equally large carnivores started appearing all over the place.
It appears that during the Pleistocene era there were a lot of large predators running around. These included animals like mammoths, giant ground sloths and mastodons. This why carnivores like saber-toothed tigers and cave hyenas were necessary.
Today large herbivores like elephants, deer or bison can overgraze in an area and cause a lot of problems for the ecosystem. That is why it is important that carnivores keep their numbers down. Imagine how much damage a 2 ton herbivore could have done to the environment if left unchecked.
The Pleistocene era lasted from around 1 million years ago to 11,000 years ago. In this period of time researchers have always wondered why the giant herbivores that lived did not destroy the habitats they were part of.
Next the researchers tried to estimate the exact size of these herbivores. With data from bones that they have found in the past they were able to create some mathematical formulas that would allow them to measure exact weight. It would also seem that the carnivores preferred to operate in packs which would allow them to take down bigger prey than a single hunter could achieve.
The scientists told press that they would need a lot more time in order to fully be able to understand how the ecosystem in that period of time worked. They are now certain that they were entirely different from the ecosystems that we have nowadays all around the world.
All of this research could help us understand how the world worked at that time. It could also give us a little insight on how it is that we managed to evolve and get to the point in which we are now.
One thing is for certain, if you were to travel back in time to that exact period you would be looking at an entirely different landscape. Starting with the vegetation and ending with the huge animals inhabiting the planet, it would look like you’ve stepped foot on an alien planet.
