Normally Botox is used in implants and other beauty-related surgery, but this new study shows that it can help you in other ways as well. A Botox injection can be as good as an implanted device for severe incontinence. This means that now women have another option when it comes to severe incontinence.
Dr. Cindy Amundsen is the leader of this study and she mentioned that the injection is indeed a new way of relieving the symptoms of incontinence in women. She also said that these will be a great help for both doctors and patients because the Botox injections serve as a muscle relaxer as efficient as the original treatment for this condition, the implanted device.
Amundsen added that the Botox injection is a less invasive treatment and it costs far less than the surgery. However, despite the fact that it is less expensive at the beginning, the cost will start to grow because a woman needs more Botox injections compared to the device that is implanted only once.
The women who participated in this research were diagnosed with severe incontinence and drugs did not help them. In order to be part of the study, they needed to suffer more than 6 episodes in 3 days.
It showed that more women were freed of this problem after being administrated Botox than the ones who had a stimulator implanted.
“Forty-six percent in the onabotulinumtoxinA (Botox) group and 26 percent in the sacral neuromodulation group had at least a 75 percent reduction in the number of episodes of urgency incontinence,” added the research
Age is one important factor when it comes to incontinence. For instance, women who have over 45 years have a 17 % risk of experiencing this condition and those who are over 75 have a 27 % risk. The numbers also showed that 25% to 45 % of women already have a urinary incontinence whether it is a little or a severe one.
This condition is experienced by both men and women but women have a higher chance of developing this problem compared to men.
The researchers completed by saying that the causes of incontinence when it comes to women are childbirth, pregnancy, and menopause. All of them affect the urinary tract in some way.
The research proved that both Botox and surgery are good and can help with this condition but more tests need to be done before Botox becomes a safe alternative.
