While we usually tend to make the decisions that are considered normal by society, sometimes we have to take a step back and look at the whole situation we are in from a different perspective. This is exactly what Miss Norma from Michigan did when she was diagnosed with cancer.
Aged ninety, Norma decided to spend her money on a better way than chemotherapy, and thus decided to go on a trip of a lifetime through the United States. Her husband to whom she had been married for 67 years passed away from the same disease just two days before she was diagnosed with uterine cancer. As always, Norma was presented with various treatments: chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. However, her reply stunned the doctors:
“I’m 90 years old, I’m hitting the road.”
After deciding she would spend her money in a better way than the painful treatment that would probably also lead to her doom, Norma realized she could no longer stay at home without her husband. Therefore, her son, Tim and his wife, Ramie, invited her to join them on a road trip. And they have been travelling for the past six months along with Ringo, their poodle.
The family started their adventure last August. After visiting Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, they continued by passing through the Yellowstone National Park and by the Rocky Mountains. This was followed by other breathtaking destinations, such as the Grand Canyon and Disney World. They also enjoyed unique experiences like riding a hot air balloon and watching whales in Florida.
Their trip is documented on a Facebook Page named Driving Miss Norma.
Ramie is the one speaking for the family, and she has stated that Norma has surprised everyone with her spark for adventure. She even seems to feel better after breathing fresh air and eating well. Ramie believes that the most important thing is that Norma is with her family and is enjoying herself.
The family hopes their decision will inspire others to choose wisely how they will spend the last days of their lives. Hopefully, their story will lead to less elders being isolated at their homes or at hospitals and departing this life in solitude. The fact that inspirational 90-year old Norma decided to travel across the U.S. instead of lying in a hospital bed for the rest of her days should make us all think more about what truly matters in life.
