The human remains identified in Gooseberry Falls State Park, Minnesota last year have been matched to a woman who had been missing since 1985. Her name was Cassandra Rhines and a homicide investigation is presently being conducted to find the person who murdered her.
She was just 19 years old when she went missing 30 years ago and the police are following some leads at the moment, hoping to find out more about her. Moreover, the people who have known her are strongly advised to go talk to the police, since any additional information may be crucial to solving a case so old.
The police have reasons to believe that Cassandra Rhines was implicated in prostitution, as she had been working as an exotic dancer prior to her disappearance.
They also found out that the 19-year-old was living with a man at that time, but they need help in order to identify him. For the moment, he is most likely the main suspect. Therefore, anybody who knows who that man might have been should call the police immediately.
“Investigators need the public’s help to better understand who Cassandra Rhines knew and who may have sought to harm her,” said a representative of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) in a press release.
He also added that anybody who can help them construct a more detailed timeline of her disappearance would be significantly improving the odds of ever finding Cassandra’s killer.
Her remains were found in the Minnesota park on May 6th 2014 completely by chance. They were identified by an employee of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, while he was enjoying a walk in Gooseberry Falls State Park.
And it was the fact that he ventured to a more secluded part of the park that lead him to his discovery. Otherwise, it is entirely possible that Cassandra Rhines’ remains would have never been found in due time so that they may be used by forensic experts to identify her.
The DNA from these remains was matched to hers, thanks to the latest technology that is able to extract DNA even from very old material that is extremely deteriorated.
Furthermore, it was very fortunate that Cassandra’s family have cooperated with the BCA in their ongoing struggle with unidentified remains. They have provided their DNA to the authorities back in 2013, in the hopes of finding closure one day.
Their hopes of ever seeing her again must have been slim at best, after Cassandra having been missing for the last 30 years, but now at least they have an answer and they may come to terms with a definite explication for her disappearance.
It remains to be seen when the police will be able to find out more about the life and the disappearance of Cassandra Rhines and hopefully the BCA will one day be able to find her murderer so that he gets the punishment he so greatly deserves for taking the life of a 19-year-old.
