NASA Discovers Pyramid Shaped Structure On Ceres

A mysterious pyramid shaped structure has been discovered on the surface of dwarf planet Ceres by NASA’s Dawn probe.

A series of images captured by NASA’s Dawn spacecraft reveal a mysterious pyramidal structure that rises on the surface of Ceres, the dwarf planet from the Asteroid Belt that lies between Mars and Jupiter.

This discovery has sparked an endless amount of controversial comments, as some conspiracy theory adepts view the structure as a revealing sign of alien presence on Ceres. NASA however is steering clear from this type of conclusions, and is focusing on the fact that the mountain-like structure is an anomaly, given the fact that Ceres is a fairly flat planet, scattered with craters.

The fact that it is holds the highest point on the planet makes stand out quite a lot and it has been described as a pyramid-like structure. NASA however, has formally described it in a very calm and collected manner, as “a mountain with steep slopes protruding from a relatively smooth area of the dwarf planet’s surface”.

This mysterious steep mountain raises 3 miles high from Ceres ground level and is currently the only mountain-like form that has been discovered on the dwarf planet. NASA has reported that the images were taken by the Dawn probe from the sizable distance of approximately 2,700 miles.

“These and other features will allow us to understand the inner structure of Ceres that we cannot sense directly,” reported NASA’s deputy principal investigator for the Dawn mission, Carol Raymond.

The Dawn mission is a legendary success for NASA, as it has managed to do something that no other probe has proven capable of. It has closely researched the Vesta protoplanet, that is located in the Asteroid Belt as well throughout 2011 and 2012 and then it has successfully reached Ceres this year on March 6th.

There is more work ahead for Dawn, as it is planned to take further images of Ceres until the end of this month, and then move even closer to the dwarf planet at a distance of approximately 900 miles.

The NASA probe takes images, but also employs advanced spectrometric technology in order to assess the chemical compounds that are present on it.

While the mountainous pyramid structure remains a mystery at the time being, future information provided by Dawn will make it clear whether or not it is the only structure of its kind and will hopefully reveal what it is made of.
