An armed NCCU shooter is still at large after Sunday’s attack at the university’s campus, it has been reported.
At approximately 10:53 p.m. ET., a person was injured during the shooting in Durham, North Carolina. At around 11:00 p.m. the victim was transported by an ambulance to the hospital, Durham Police representatives have declared.
According to campus officials, the person shot by the attacker was a 19-year old sophomore student. Luckily, it appears that the sustained injuries weren’t severe enough to be life-threatening.
In fact, the victim has already been released from hospital this morning, an NCCU spokesperson has declared.
A warning regarding the attack at the academic institution had been issued on Twitter at around 11:15 p.m., citing an “NCCU University Police Emergency”.
“Active shooter. If safe, seek shelter away from gunfire. Active shooter. Lock your door”, stated the Eagle Alert tweet.
The college remained on lockdown until 11:50 p.m., to allow Durham police officers to investigate the scene of the crime.
However, normal activities on campus have now resumed, and the university has posted an “All clear” on its Twitter account.
As witnesses reported, there were several police evidence cones lined up on East Lawson Street, between the O’Kelly-Riddick football stadium and the university’s parking deck. Apparently, those mark areas where bullet casings have been discovered by investigators.
For now, law enforcement is still searching for the shooter who wreaked havoc on campus. Based on preliminary information, it appears that the incident resulted from an argument between the attacker and a group of friends.
During the altercation, the suspect left briefly and then returned with a gun. Afterwards, he unleashed a barrage of bullets into the students, who began scrambling for safety.
19-year old freshman Kenneth White was one of the people who were attacked, and according to him one of his friends was injured in the backside, before managing to take shelter.
The wounded sophomore was placed on a nearby bench until first responders arrived at the scene. Eyewitnesses have reported that it took some time and pleading for the policemen to take the victim to the hospital.
Instead, the injured man was placed in handcuffs and strip searched thoroughly, despite his injuries.
The gun confrontation was filmed and posted online shortly afterwards, but it was eventually deleted after other students claimed it cast their university in an unfavorable light.
Meanwhile, NCCU Police Department officials have declared that the incident hadn’t been an “active shooter situation” as previously reported, and that the isolated shooting didn’t occur at random.
However, apparently there is no description of the culprit, so any additional information from potential witnesses is highly valuable.
So far, the manhunt is still ongoing, and although police officers have combed through the campus the culprit has yet to be apprehended.
Anyone who might assist with identifying the attacker or advancing the case is urged to contact the NCCU Police Department at 919-530-6106.
