In spite of their eagerness to celebrate the victory of the LGBT movement by allowing users to paint their photos in rainbow shades and thus promoting diversity and change, Facebook still has a lot of work to do in terms of employee variety.
This year’s diversity report shows that the great majority of the company’s staff is still represented by white male employees.
This comes as a huge disappointment to the company’s senior representatives who have been boasting about creating a working place that promotes the diversity of cultural background, race, age, sexual orientation and nationality, according to the company’s head of diversity, Maxine Williams.
“Diversity is central to Facebook’s mission of creating a more open and connected world: it’s good for our products and for our business,“ she said in a blog post.
The statistics are not very different from last year, with a slight increase in the percentage of women working for the non-tech departments, which was only 47 in 2014 and is 52 percent this year.
The report showed a very high number of the company’s staff is represented by men. They account for 68 percent of the total number of employees working in the company’s headquarters. They also seemed to be favored for leadership positions, as the male senior staff represents 77 percent. The tech department does not rank better, with 84 percent of its staff being men as well.
Racial diversity is also not Facebook’s strongest point. Statistics reveal that more than half (55 percent) of the company’s employees are white. Facebook’s American headquarters only have 36 percent of the total staff of Asian origin, 4 percent Hispanic and 2 percent African-American. There are even fewer of them in leadership positions, with 21 percent Asian, 3 percent Hispanic and 2 percent African-American.
However, Facebook should not be too ashamed, because other giant companies have not recorded better progress in terms of diversity either. Earlier this year, the California-based company Google, which is also all for diversity, issued its diversity report and the numbers were far from the ones expected by everyone.
Just like Facebook, Google’s employees are mainly male (70 percent) and they account for 80 percent of the leadership positions in the company.
They also spoke about their great disappointment and said that there is still much work to be done to hire more people belonging to minority group, while still keeping to their commitment to only employ people who fit into the high standards of the company.
In order to do so, they have started to send representatives to top universities to hire the most talented fresh graduates belonging to various ethnic groups.
