However, experts feel that there is still very little research done so far regarding these people’s health and how their lifestyle choices influence it.
This is why researchers are planning to start a new program, called PRIDE Study in order to see what the LGBT people have to say in terms of health and how they can contribute to statistics.
In order to do that, they are planning to use the people’s iPhones to have their newly developed Research Kit application installed to conduct various surveys related to health issues. These will include sexually transmitted diseases but also cancer, smoking, obesity and mental health.
The main aim is to check if there is any connection between their preferences in terms of relationships and various conditions.
“The main question there is, what is the relationship between being LGBTQ—or more broadly a sexual or gender minority person—and mental and physical health?” said the co-director of the PRIDE Study from the University of California, San Francisco, Mitchell Lunn.
It is going to be as easy as possible because using an application on their phone is extremely accessible to almost everyone. You can basically take a survey from anywhere, provided you have an iPhone on you.
The idea came after the researchers saw what a huge popularity the ResearchKit-powered application designed by experts at Stanford University had when they surveyed people about heart diseases. It was reported that 11.000 people signed up to use the app in a single day.
Thus, implementing applications on iPhones can prove more efficient than other methods for recruiting volunteers. Under normal conditions, it would take more than a year to have that many participants take part in a study.
The PRIDE Study is due to start in about a year. Until then, the researchers are planning to find out what the subjects of interest are related to the LGBT community, in order to allow experts to design the surveys.
The application is already available for people to download. Apple has embraced the idea with a lot of excitement, especially given the fact that CEO Tim Cook is also a LGBT advocate and takes pride in the fact that he is a homosexual.
