A new Pepsi smartphone is currently being crowdfunded in China, and it appears that Coca Cola will soon be vanquished by its rival when it comes to launching the first beverage-inspired cell phone.
The manufacturers of this new device are Schenzen Scooby Communication Equipment Co., who are initially planning to release it in China only, provided that their crowdfunding campaign on the JD Finance platform is successful.
The Pepsi P1 smartphone is decorated with the soda company’s instantly recognizable logo: a simple circle with the upper half red and the lower half blue, separated by a wavy white line. It also sports a steel unibody design, and is currently available in 3 different color schemes: blue, gold and silver.
As far as its technical specs are concerned, the mobile device supports 4G LTE connectivity and operates on Dido OS 6.1, a customized user interface based on Android 5.1 Lollipop.
It’s powered by a 1.7 Ghz MediaTek octa-core processor, with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage. It also features a 5.5 inch Full HD 1080p display screen, with 2.5D curved glass.
Camera capabilities are high, given that the device is equipped with a 13-megapixel camera at its rear, and a 5-megapixel camera at the front.
Pepsi P1 also has a fingerprint sensor for extra security, as well as a secondary SIM card slot, which can alternatively be used as a microSD slot, so as to expand storage by up to 64 GB.
Moreover, it supports Bluetooth, GPS and GPRS/EDGe, and its 3,000 mAh battery corresponds to one day without extra charging.
So far, on the crowdfunding platform, around $163,000 have been raised, and the early bird editions which had been on offer for just $78 have already sold out.
However, there are still some Pepsi P1 smartphones available for $110 and $156, as the campaign will continue for 10 more days. There is also the possibility of ordering a phone accompanied with a selfie stick, by pledging $203.
It is expected that once the project ends on December 3, and the developers manage to raise approximately $468,000 in funding, the phone will start selling at higher prices, averaging around $200.
Only time will tell if this new smartphone sold under the Pepsi logo will prove to be a successful business venture. So far, in terms of sales, Coke is still reigning undefeated in the United States, its market share being at 17.6%, whereas its competitor has only managed to obtain 8.8%.
The silver lining is that Pepsi has managed to surpass Diet Coke, which used to be on second place ever since 2010, so maybe this new product will manage to spark even greater interest in Pepsi beverages, allowing the soda company to strengthen its foothold in the market.
