A New York-based woman has sued media house ABC for broadcasting her late husband’s last video on a television show without taking her consent, just for the sake of ‘entertainment’.
Anita Chanko, widow of 83-year-old Mark, said that ABC had broadcasted her husband’s last surgery in its regular episode of NY Med that also featured Dr. Mehmet Oz.
Anita called it a horrifying experience to watch her husband in the video clip, showing the doctors conducting surgery on him after a road accident.
Mark had passed 16 months ago after he was hit with a sanitation truck.
“I clenched my fists so tightly that the palms of my hands almost looked like stigmata,” she said after hearing the doctors saying ‘he was gone’.
The video also showed the doctors discussing about the fatal injuries of her husband.
According to Anita, her husband was easily identified in the footage as she started receiving numerous calls from her friends and known ones immediately after the video broadcast.
But ABC defended its action saying the patient cannot be recognized as his face was completely blurred in the video clip.
Anita and her children filed a lawsuit against ABC, the attending surgeon, Dr Sebastian Schubl and New York-Presbyterian Hospital for not taking their consent before airing the video.
