Because pizza boxes contain chemicals that threaten your health, the Food and Drug Administration has decided to ban three chemical compounds that are used for these packages, as well as popcorn bags and sandwich wrappers, in order to make them water and oil resistant. It’s safe to say that no one likes a leaky pizza box, but are you willing to sacrifice your health in order to avoid that?
According to the FDA, you shouldn’t, because perfluoroalkyl chemicals, the ones that got banned, can severely affect your health, especially if you ingest them. These chemical compounds are usually used in order to create oil resistant or water resistant objects. Most often, you see perfluoroalkyl used in Teflon pans, life jackets, non-stick cookware and food package manufacturing.
Because these chemicals are toxic to birds and other animals, researchers have decided to make inquiries regarding the long-term effects on human health. The study concluded that high perfluoroalkyl intakes can lead to reproductive and developmental toxicity, as well as cancer.
True, it seems that in our present time, basically everything can cause cancer, even though scientists are still inconclusive in regards to why exactly cancer appears, be it from environmental elements or genetic alteration. Either way, it is commonly known that an unhealthy lifestyle and certain chemicals can indeed raise the risk of cancer but that’s about it. There are people around the world that smoke two packets of cigarettes per day and drink alcohol like there is no tomorrow while still feeling perfectly fine.
Previous studies have linked heightened cholesterol levels to large amounts of perfluoroalkyl intake as well. But this could be a simple correlation if one would take into account the fact that by eating greasy food like pizza or other similar products, your blood cholesterol will rise without any influence from perfluoroalkyl compounds.
If a woman would eat pizza that got contaminated with this chemical while nursing her offspring, the baby will have a heightened risk of developing deformities. Pregnant women are under the threat of fetal brain malformations as well. Hormonal levels will also be affected, because perfluoroalkyl attacks the thyroid gland, changing its normal function, leading to a hormonal production decrease.
What is interesting is the fact that food packaging containing this substance were completely off the US market since 2011. But nonetheless, they are somewhat still present, being bought from overseas. Of course, this move is heavily criticized by various food delivery businesses and other similar firms that require water and oil resistant packaging in order to deliver their products.
If you want to protect yourself from this chemical substance, exercise caution when eating food from oil resistant packaging. Fast food products and other oily foods are often packaged in recipients that contain perfluoroalkyl, so the general public should try to refrain from consuming them. Disposing of Teflon pans that show signs of degradation and not exceeding 450 degrees in temperature while cooking is also highly advised.
Even though this ban has been instated since the 4th of January, any objections to the petition will be available for filing only through the 3rd of February. But the fact that pizza boxes contain chemicals that threaten your health, among other food packaging methods, still remains, urging manufacturers to either change the chemical or opt for a new manner of delivery system.
