It was six years ago, at the meeting of the International Association for Food Protection in Anaheim, CA, that officials from big food companies such as ConAgra and Nestlé warned about the unhealthy common practice of eating raw cookie dough, even uncooked frozen pizza.
This discussion which happened six years ago was put on the event`s agenda due to the severe E. Coli outbreak in 2009. According to what was said during that panel, some people chose to ignore cooking instructions or didn`t even read them.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is confronted with the same issue right now. This is the reason for which they decided to take action and do something in regards to this increasing problem. They released a warning expressing concern over the fact that people eat raw cookie dough. The official statement included references to bread batter, tortillas and pizza also.
According to the release, sampling raw cookie dough or any other kind of dough can make people sick.
This declaration was prompted by a recent statement made by General Mills, in which the company recalled over 10 million pounds of flour, sold under three different names: Signature Kitchens, Gold Medal, and Gold Medal Wondra.
These three brands sold various types of flour, including unbleached flour, all-purpose, even self-rising flour.
This warning is associated with the increasing number of people that reported being sick after eating raw dough. Several patients around the country have suffered from infections with a strain of bacteria known under the name of Shiga Toxin. This bacterium is producing E. coli 0121.
Furthermore, there is a growing concern related to the fact that some of the recalled flours had been sold to restaurants which allow children to play with flour and raw dough while waiting for their food to be ready.
Since flour has a long shelf life, it may be possible for people to notice that they have such bags stored in their homes. In this situation, FDA advises throwing these bags of flour away.
According to the warnings released by FDA, raw dough is unsafe to eat because the dough has not undergone any step that kills bacteria in this stage of the cooking process. These “kill steps” are boiling, frying, baking, microwaving or roasting.
