A recent study suggests that marijuana can heal broken bones. Cannabidiol (CBD), one of the compounds present in marijuana, can help with speeding up the healing process of bone fractures.
The study was published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research and was conducted by researchers from Israel, Sweden and Switzerland. The scientists tested the effects of CBD in the healing process of bones without the presence of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the compound responsible for psychotropic effect of the drug. Unlike THC, CBD is not involved in getting people high.
Researchers have discovered that CBD has the property of enhancing the maturation of the matrix of collagen and it can also strengthen the bones while they heal. These properties offer a solid basis for the mineralization of the bone tissue. In addition, besides the fact that the compound accelerates the healing process of bone fractures, the bones which are treated with CBD become stronger and less likely to break again.
One of the researchers involved in the study Dr. Yankel Gabet from the Bone Research Laboratory at Tel Aviv University remarked:
“We found CBD alone to be sufficiently effective in enhancing fracture healing. Other studies have shown CBD to be a safe agent, which leads us to believe we should continue this line of study in clinical trials to assess its usefulness in improving human fracture healing.”
For the study the scientists used male rats. They performed standardized fractures on the femurs of the animals. Afterwards the rats were divided into two groups which were injected with CBD or THC. The findings indicated that only the CBD component had a beneficial effect on enhancing bone growth and accelerating the healing process. The healing process in rats was improved in eight weeks.
Researchers explained that it has something to do with the cannabinoid receptors in the human body. Humans are constructed in such a way that they naturally assimilate cannabinoids because of the endocannabinoid system which is involved in regulating a series of psychological processes. Even if the compound comes from an outside source like marijuana our body is perfectly designed to respond to it.
Besides its positive effect in bone healing, marijuana is also used in treating a series of other conditions such as multiple sclerosis, cancer, PTSD and chronic pain.
