Robot staffed Henn-na Hotel in Japan is clearly the hotel of the future. By replacing at least part of the staff with robots, they can significantly cut costs.
Hideo Sawada is the executive of Henn-na Hotel and he pointed out that all of the technology that was introduced to the hotel was meant in fact to reduce the enormous prices that are being charged for rooms in five star hotel and provide affordable services for people.
Its name translated to “Weird Hotel”, but it is more of an extraordinary hotel, considering that about half of the staff is comprised out of robots. Ever since the guests set foot into the lobby, they are greeted by a Japanese speaking receptionist, that even has an English speaking dinosaur sidekick, that wears a bow tie and small hat.
The entire check-in process is conducted through top notch technology, and it is all made accessible for the guests. Then, they are showed to their rooms by a robotic “bell boy” on wheels that has a special compartment for their luggage.
Then, when they enter the hotel room, there is no need for a key, as there is a facial recognition system installed, so that the guests are the only ones who can authorize access into their rooms.
Once inside, they can enjoy the comfort of a true five star hotel room and they will even have a small adorable assistant, named “Tuly”, that will do all sorts of activities. Tuly is responsible for turning the lights on and off in the room and answering whatever simple questions the guests might have regarding the weather or the time.
There are some human staff members that remain indispensable to the hotel and those are the cleaning and the security staff. Even the Japanese have yet to discover a way to replace the human touch necessary for providing these services.
However, even the partial reduction of the staff has managed to bring the nightly rate of the hotel to half or even a third of the regular amount. One night at the Weird Hotel goes for $80,and bear in mind that it is provides five star services at these rates.
The robotized hotel is part of the Huis Ten Bosch Sasebo-based amusement park from Nagasaki and it is the first of its kind in the entire world. Mr. Sawada said that he hopes that the robot hotel concept could be brought to the US and the EU soon enough and that one day it will become the standard of quality for hotels everywhere.
