Sam’s Choice beef patties are now being recalled due to wood fragments that may have entered the production process, authorities have recently announced.
The popular prepackaged products had been sold solely at Walmart stores, across the entire nation, being shipped there by the Huisken Meat Company, headquartered in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota.
As explained by the United States Food and Drug Administration (USDA), in an online post appearing on Monday, December 4, beef patties amounting to 89,568 pounds will have to be immediately removed from supermarket shelves, so as to reduce any risk of injury or illness.
More precisely, the recall refers to Sam’s Choice Fire Side Gourmet Black Angus beef patties (with 19% Vidalia Onion), commercialized in 2-pound packs, containing 6 frozen meat items.
The ready-made, boxed meals which may include foreign material ( identified as pieces of wood ) can be recognized after their establishment code (EST.394 A) and their date of manufacture, spanning from November 19, 2015 to December 9, 2015.
Also, the expiration date for these possibly tainted food items is either May 17 or 29, 2016 or June 6, 2016.
According to health officials from USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, so far there have been no reports suggesting that the beef patties have indeed caused any harm to consumers.
Therefore, the recall was actually issued voluntarily, as a preventive measure, in order to signal this potential choking hazard, and to stop any harmful side-effects or injuries from appearing as a result of consuming these products.
Michael Riley, vice-president of sales and marketing at Huisken, has declared that the company has always put customer safety first, which is why it has been quick to inform the FDA regarding the possible presence of extraneous material in prepackaged beef products.
Even if the likelihood of wood pieces being found in the patties is actually quite low, a recall was still deemed necessary, and ever since this decision was taken executives have been offering their full support to authorities handling this crisis.
As Riley has explained, stricter regulations will be introduced, so as to ensure that such contamination remains an isolated incident, never to be repeated in the future as well.
Meanwhile, a Walmart spokesperson has declared that, across the entire chain of hypermarkets and grocery stores that had made this product available to buyers, orders have been given not just to remove the perilous items, but also to destroy them immediately.
Those who have already bought the offending beef patties are strongly advised to abstain from consuming them. Instead, they should either discard them or take them back to the local Walmart where they purchased them from, in order benefit from a full refund.
Also, if anyone has already eaten the meat products included in this recall, and is now experiencing health issues, a physician should be contacted immediately.
People who have queries related to this contamination involving Sam’s Choice beef patties can telephone the USDA’s customer service manager, Debbie Green, at (618)857-4011.
