A new species of octopus was discovered and taking into account how cute the little creature is scientists have thought of naming the tiny octopus Opisthoteuthis adorabilis. The creature looks like Pearl, the character from Finding Nemo, but also resembles a ghost from the well-known video game Pac-Man.
Stephanie Bush is a postdoctoral researcher at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. She is the one in charge with studying the tiny octopus, meaning that she will register the formal description of the newly-discovered species and will also find a name for it. Bush declared that since the octopus is so cute Opisthoteuthis adorabilis could be a suitable name.
According to Bush the octopus has large eyes compared to the rest of the body. She said that in order to propel itself off the ocean floor the creature puffs like a parachute. It has a large web between its legs, which are quite long and the two fins on its head make it look as if the tiny octopus has ears.
The cephalopod is very fragile because of its gelatinous consistency and its color, which is light pink, makes it even cuter.
Not much is known about this species. The 7-inch-long cephalopod is found at deep-sea levels and scientists have been collecting them since 1990. Even today researchers are wondering how come the tiny octopus can survive at depths of 984 to 1,476 feet, where the environment is very hostile.
Since the creatures lives in deep seas scientists have worked hard in order to reconstruct their usual habitat. The tiny octopuses had to accommodate to the aquariums so the tanks in which they were placed was slightly illuminated by a special red light in order to keep it dark. Scientists also used a water cooling system so as to maintain the water temperature at extremely low rates.
Their job showed good results: the octopuses felt so safe in their new artificial home that they produced eggs. Researchers found four eggs from the bottom of the tank and right now they are preserving them and waiting for them to hatch and give life to other cute octopuses.
Until Stephanie Bush will decide on a scientific name for the tiny octopus species the Monterey Bay Aquarium has nicknamed the creature “flapjack octopus”.
