A new study focused on finding solutions that are both drug-free and efficient for getting rid of cancer fatigue. The researchers that completed this study observed that the best medicine for this problem is exercise. They mentioned that having an active lifestyle is the best solution for cancer survivors.
Previous studies showed that exercising after recovering from cancer can help people fight this disease. Other studies showed that breast cancer survivors that exercise have a lower risk of suffering from cancer again. This new research focused on a big problem caused by this condition: fatigue.
The research was published in JAMA Oncology and it was led by the Wilmot Cancer Institute. The experts from this institute mentioned that the best recommendation for cancer fatigue is to exercise. Instead of drinking coffee or taking drugs, cancer patients should take a walk or ride the bicycle if they want to feel better.
This research actually investigated more than 110 studies that focused on the same topic. The findings showed that doing the recommended amount of exercise every week (150 minutes) can help cancer patients that are suffering from fatigue.
More than 11,000 people participated in these 113 studies. Almost half of these patients were women with breast cancer. The other half were men with various types of cancer. All of the studies showed that only exercise was able to reduce cancer fatigue. The researchers observed that working out is better and more effective than taking drugs.
These studies also focused on therapy and its effects on cancer fatigue. They mentioned that therapy can also help with this problem. When they tried to combine these two solutions (exercising and therapy) they had mixed results. This means that going to therapy and exercising can be too much and it won’t be more effective.
Studies on this topic have shown that exercise is the best medicine for cancer fatigue. Doctors advise their patients to take it slow, especially if they were not active before getting sick. In order to recover, their body first needs to adapt to the regular workouts.
