Rosa Labs intends to release an updated version of Soylent, the powdery meal which only needs water. Named Soylent 2.0, the new product which will be available in October has the same nutritional value as the original product, but the new formula will also contain algae.
It might be considered that Soylent is similar to the other food substituted such as Boost or Ensure. However, Rob Rhinehart, CEO of Rosa Labs, pointed out that unlike other such products which are used as periodic supplements, Soylent is intended to be an entire meal substitute. Moreover another advantage which Soylent has is the fact that it is more nourishing than the rival products and less expensive.
The philosophies of the nutrition are of course the same: we’re seeking to provide full daily value requirements in a sustainable fashion.”
FDA (the United States Food and Drug Administration) has indeed labeled Soylent as a food product, not as a nutritional or dietary supplement. Currently Soylent consumers use the product to replace only some normal meals with the drinkable one, not all of their meals.
The product will be more expensive than Soylent 1.0 which cotes 9 dollars. Soylent 2.0 will cost 12 dollars for a complete nutrition per day. The liquid meal replacer can be maintained viable for one year and it does not need refrigeration. Soylent 2.0 contains 27 grams of fiber per 2.000 calories. This represents more than the 14 grams consumed by the average American citizen.
This could be a good solution for replacing complex meals. Americans spend almost 30 minutes every day on preparing their meals and 151 dollars on food weekly. In other countries people spend even more time and money on meals. Finding a way to reduce the time and the cost of food will contribute to securing the economic stability for those who can barely afford a healthy meal.
Nutritional doctor Antoinette Saddler from George Washington University is of the opinion that even though Soylent won’t be used regularly by consumers all around the world it might prove to be a useful product for people who suffer from severe gastrointestinal disorders or those who are able to eat only food in liquid form.
