The 75-year-old cosmologist, Stephen William Hawking, revolutionized through his work key aspects of his field. He was the first scientist who used a relationship between quantum mechanics and the general theory of relativity to define the cosmology. Even though he studied it his entire life, the famous theoretical physicist didn’t manage to visit space. However, thanks to Sir Richard Branson, Stephen Hawking now has the opportunity to experience his very first space adventure.
Virgin Galactic to Be the First Sub-orbital Commercial Space Agency
The English business magnate, Sir Richard Branson, admitted that Stephen Hawking is one brilliant mind that he highly admires. He is thankful to the scientist for his power to open the eyes of an entire world regarding the mysteries space holds for them. The philanthropist is also excited that such a genius in cosmology is also having a kind and charming nature.
Richard Branson has many business projects. However, one of the most notable plans is the Virgin Galactic. This is a spaceflight company founded in 2004. The goal of this project is to create the first space travel opportunity for tourists, not just professionals. Its first launch test back in 2014 ended up to be a total disaster. As soon as the spaceship left its mothership, it suddenly broke apart. The destroyed parts of the spacecraft fell into the Mojave desert in California. The cause of the accident is still uncertain.
However, a second trial enjoyed great success with VSS Unity that took flight in December 2016. Another series of three successful launches took place on March 2, 2017. Thus, there are chances that the first sub-orbital commercial space flight will happen soon. There are already around 640 people who signed up for a seat in the space adventure. The ticket price was set for $250,000.
Richard Branson Gifted Hawking His First Space Adventure for Free
However, as Richard Branson is a big fan of Stephen Hawking, he offered the only free ticket for his spaceship to the scientist. Hawking expressed his greatest appreciation for the gesture. He confessed that he already completed a Zero Gravity flight with success. He admitted that this space adventure would be the last ambition that could crown a lifetime full of achievements.
While Hawking is optimistic about his first flight, he doesn’t share the same view regarding the political theater in America. While this country holds dear friends and memories of him, Hawking fears that he is no longer welcome in an America that is led by a demagogue.
