Specialists use Flickr to create breathtaking timelapses

A brilliant team of researchers from Google and the University of Washington has created an impressive method that can utilize photographs from websites like Flickr and Picasa and unite them to create an extraordinary sequence of breathtaking timelapses.

What is truly amazing is the fact that all the pictures used in the project came together to form such a beautiful show despite the fact that they had no relation to each other whatsoever. Their material consisted entirely of photographs taken by amateurs on various vacations and outings along the time.

What they used were the photos of various landscapes that have been taken along the years. And it is outstanding how their method has managed to find a common viewpoint in thousands of pictures.

Then, every single one of these was modified so that in the end there are the same colors and the same frame all throughout the timelapse. This way, the feeling of continuity is real and palpable.

“Suppose that you could observe an entire year in a few seconds — a 10 million times speed-up (…) At this scale, you could see cities expand, glaciers shrink, seasons change, and children grow continuously”, the team said.

They used a total of 86 million photographs to create a magical series of spectacular timelapses that portray the wonders of the Earth. They range from plants growing, to skyscrapers being built in the big cities and to the magnificent aurora borealis.

What they are offering is a stunning spectacle of life, capable of reminding people that out planet is amazing. With our minds drenched in day-to-day worries, we ever-so-often forget that living on this planet is a privilege and that we must rejoice at the sight of such marvels.

Furthermore, being able to observe how so very many phenomena evolve all the way through a period of ten years in a mere minute has the capacity of making us reflect on various aspects from large-scale standpoint and also from a detailed microscopic one.

If you view the situation from the distance that the timelapse provides, there is hope to be found in the fact that some things are always going to be there, constituting true pillars for our existence. There is solace in the fact that there are constants far bigger than us, that can protect and nurture us.

On the other hand, if you focus on the multitude of small changes that are displayed throughout this uniquely constituted minute, there is yet another cause for being hopeful. New and marvelous things are constantly happening all around us, and there is strength and enthusiasm to be found in this.

Ultimately, the method developed by this research team has succeeded in providing more than it originally thought it could.Their impressive technique has taken millions of pictures that have been taken by millions of people all around the world and combined them all to create an exceptional demonstration of the greatness of our planet. And it is when you think that so very many people have contributed to all of this, that you realize that the project is remarkable beyond words.
