In the last decade, the state of California has been making several efforts to raise taxes on cigarettes and now electronic cigarettes are up for discussions. This idea has been brought up by the anti-smoking activists that want to raise the taxes for tobacco cigarettes but want to tax the electronic ones too. The electronic cigarettes did not have any taxes until now.
This proposition will be voted in November. If Proposition 56 will be accepted then California will be the 5th state that introduces a tax on electronic cigarettes after Minnesota, Kansas, North Carolina and Louisiana. California is considered the most populous state and it has already banned smoking cigarettes in bars. This means that it could bring a new trend for other places to make these changes. If this proposition is going to take action, many states will follow California’s lead into taxing electronic cigarettes.
Electronic cigarettes are considered to be as bad as normal cigarettes and people need to be aware of this.
Of course, people did not vote for the raise of taxes for normal cigarettes and this could mean that they are not going to accept this new proposal. The cigarette industry doesn’t agree with this measure and neither does the vaping one.
The bad news is that those who make and sell the electronic cigarettes have been able to raise $56 million and the ones that support this proposition have raised only $20 million. Despite this, the ones that support Proposition 56 are educators and doctors. Another person that got involved in this is Tom Steyer, a billionaire environmentalist.
The activists say that the biggest problem with the electronic cigarettes is that the flavored liquid comes in different cartoon characters which could attract youngsters and it could make them start smoking. Although it is just a marketing strategy people are not pleased with this.
On the other hand, the ones that support the cigarettes mentioned that California and Hawaii have already made several changes that affect the industry such as banning the electronic cigarettes from bars as if they were tobacco cigarettes.
Despite the fact that the tax could reduce the number of people who use these devices by 5%, people don’t agree with Proposition 56.
