30-year-old Jennifer Fitcher, the teacher who had sex with 3 of her students, will spend the following 22 years of her life in prison. When the judge pronounced the sentence on Thursday he called her a “predator”.
The woman is a former Lakeland English teacher. In April she admitted to 37 counts of unlawful sexual contact with three of her minor student who were 17 years old. She even got pregnant with one of them, but terminated the pregnancy. At that time the woman refused a plea deal by the State Attorney’s Office probably in an attempt to achieve a more merciful sentence.
On Thursday at Polk County Court she gave an emotional speech while tears were running down her face. Both the victims and their families were in attendance. Fitcher said that she despises what her selfishness has done and cannot expect her words to be enough. She also said that she wishes to go back in time and remove her deeds. The woman addressed to her former students and their families and afterwards begged forgiveness from the judge. Even Fitcher’s father asked for a merciful sentence for his daughter, who deserved up to 15 years behind bars for each of her counts. However the judge took into account the fact that multiple victims were involved. He declared:
“You’re going to have a long time to think about what you did. I trust that your faith is real, and you’ll have a long time to let your faith work in your life so that when you come out you’re a different person.”
In 2008 Fichter was reported to have had inappropriate conduct in relation with an eighth grader. Later that year she resigned from that school district and was hired in August 2011 by another school. She was accused of having sex with the 17-year-old students only one month after she received her new job.
The victims and their families say that the former teacher has shattered their lives by seducing her underage students whom she met in off-campus locations, at parties and even in her own apartment.
