According to a recent report conducted by the Pew Research Center, teens experience the world through their phones and the internet. But while this has been depicted as highly detrimental to their health and social development, it seems that the teens themselves don’t see things like that at all.
The main idea that the teens are trying to put out there is that this entire situation regarding the effects of social media and the internet on their lives is best taken with a grain of salt, because they are simply developing in line with the latest technology that is taking up more and more space in all of out day to day lives.
One of the facts that the Pew report has pointed out is that teens seem to communicate mostly through texting, which clearly comes with an entire series of negative aspects, but it is nothing that teens haven’t been doing for quite some time now.
As technology evolved, teens have essentially replaced talking amongst themselves on the telephone with talking through SMS messages, and this is quite a logical outcome of the development of smartphones and other high-tech devices.
In accordance to their preferences, teens also communicate on social media platforms or on gaming platforms. Predictably, girls seem to display a clear preference for the social media platforms, that they use to get up to date with the latest info about their friends and to actually communicate with them, as most social media platforms offer instant messaging features nowadays.
Boys talk to their friends on gaming platforms most of the time, because this combines two of their favorite activities, gaming and hanging out with their friends. Most games include communication features for players that enable teens to spend a a lot of time with their friends without even leaving the house.
Furthermore, it seems that the idea of friends has become more relative, as the vast majority of teens have friends they talk to every day at school or other places where they meet physically, but also quite a few online friends, who they might have never met, nor will they ever see in real life.
Both boys and girls have these types of friends, as they come with both the social media and the gaming territory. Having online friends can be quite beneficial, because it enables people from very different backgrounds and cultures to communicate on common grounds and this could have a wide range of positive effects on the way that teens perceive the world.
Another important fact revealed by the Pew report was that social media is a place where teens seem to share both their moments of happiness and their hardships. Thus, it could be a place where they find solace or a place where they get implicated in the inevitable drama associated with the age.
All in all, the Pew report has provided the point of view of the teens themselves on the matter of internet, social media and modern communication, because the way that they perceive this entire experience is key to understanding how this is different than what the teens from past generations went through and to what extent it is affecting them.
