Tesla had provided their self-driving car Model S with the 7.1 update which finally introduces the long-awaited Summon function. The Autopilot can park in certain spaces or drive itself to the place where you are.
Thanks to this new function you won’t need to walk across a huge parking space or to go into you garage because the Summon function enables the car to even close and open the garage door compatible with home link. In order for this feature to work you need to be 39 feet away from your car. Even though you won’t be able to get the car from the parking lot from the back of the company, at least you won’t need to deal with narrow parking spaces.
In November Hong Kong authorities required Tesla that until the company is able to confirm that the features released around the middle of October are safe, they should disable to semiautonomous driving technology. It seems that the authorities were worried about the fact that some drivers were enjoying the new Autopilot software introduced by Tesla a bit too much, namely they just sat in the backseat of the car and did various things such as for example shaving.
So the new Summon function which allows the car to drive itself without any driver inside might not be highly approved by Hong Kong authorities. However Tesla did not fail to address safety concerns. Besides the Summon function the 7.1 update also provides the restriction of the Autosteer technology on roads with no center driver and on residential roads. That means that when the Autosteer feature functions on a restricted road the speed of the car will be limited to the road’s speed limit and 5 mph extra.
The updates from October enabled Model S to park on its own, to steer and to change lanes. Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, said to the press that he is dreaming of fully driverless cars. He also remarked that for now it is indeed necessary to be cautious since the car is at an early stage. However, in the future, people will no longer need to keep their hands on the wheel and gradually pedals and wheels will no longer be needed. Even though there is no need for human intervention at the beginning and at the end of the drive, the wheels and pedals are still needed so for now they are not optional.
