Two boys from Oklahoma, aged 5 and 7 suffered extensive sunburns at a daycare outing, because they were not provided with any sunscreen by the personnel that was supervising them.
7-year old Connor Broadway and his 5-year-old brother Trae were taken to the Happiness is a Learning Center day care on Friday morning by their mother, Shaunna Broadway. They were extremely excited because Friday was going to be a very special day, when they could go to a water park, as part of a special outing.
All of this could have been a wonderful day of fun in the sun, but Connor and Trae’s experience turned quite sour, as after as long as five hours in the sun without any sunscreen, they suffered extensive sunburns. The day care employees that were accompanying them to the water park claim that they ran out of sunscreen and that they told the children to put their T-shirts on, but that the boys simply refused.
When Mrs. Broadway picked them up from the day care center, the boys were crying, as they were in excruciating pain, due to the extremely severe sunburns that they had suffered that day. According to what Mrs. Broadway told Buzzfeed, the daycare employees were actually laughing at Connor for crying because of the pain.
The two boys had to be taken to the hospital the next morning, as they woke up with huge boils and blisters on their shoulders and they were in severe pain. The doctors pointed out that they had both suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns on their body, but they have yet to make any more official comments. Fortunately, both boys are stable and are expected to make a full recovery, but they clearly have a long way ahead of them.
According to the children’s grandfather, both children had to have the burnt skin removed surgically from the affected areas on their backs, in order to permit the healing process to take place. Little Connor will have to be thoroughly bandaged for 72 hours, as he has suffered more severe burns.
“Whether it was intentional or not, they were supposed to take care of them and they did not and that’s the bottom line,” said Mrs. Broadway.
The Oklahoma Department of Human Services has decided to close the Happiness is a Learning Center day care center permanently after this incident, as neglect is not something that the state will take lightly. It appears that the day center has had several complaints beforehand, but they were never related to abuse or neglect.
Since this incident was made public, it should remind people that sunscreen should never be overlooked, especially when it comes to children, who have extremely sensitive skin and can easily get very severe sunburns. It is best to use a sunblock lotion of a minimum of 30 SPF on kids and to be careful to apply it to all the exposed regions, including the ears and the feet. These are the most overlooked regions that usually remain exposed to the sun and end up sunburnt.
Also, it is extremely important to reapply the sunscreen every two hours, as its effect runs out after this amount of time. Parents are advised to ask day care employees about sunscreen policies specifically, because the results are clearly serious enough to be worth the effort.
