When it was first released, Uber promised to be a revolutionizing new way of transportation. Unfortunately, not all has gone according to plan, as many users of the app have sent numerous complaints. In the light of the recent events such as the Kalamazoo shooting, the company has revealed that it has been testing a special hotline that both clients and drivers can use in case of emergency.
While the idea of Uber is to create a more friendly and relaxed atmosphere than the one of a traditional taxi, several incidents have led to this measure. It appears the company started working on it after the shootings, in order to ensure the safety of clients. However, Uber has been testing the new feature since October, which means that it was aware some problems might arise with the service.
Keeping in mind that the line should not replace the 911 emergency number, Uber officials have declared that the service is meant for those who have forgotten one of their items in the cab they rode in or if their driver misbehaved with them. However, the drivers can also report any unfortunate incidents they experienced with their clients, but also if they damaged their vehicle.
The emergency number is 800-353-8237 and can be used for free. It can be stored in the smartphone or accessed right in the app, by tapping the help button. If you decide to use the hotline, you will be able to talk with a customer service representative. If the situation worsens or presents any danger, you will be redirected to 911.
It was revealed that the Kalamazoo shooter got fares between his killings, which ended up with six dead people and two gravely injured. Unfortunately, the Kalamazoo case might be the worst event related to Uber, but the service has recorded plenty of other incidents, including sexual assault and rape reports. Since many drivers have also reported being harassed or verbally or physically attacked by customers, the new line is also at their disposal.
At the moment, the Response Team divisions only exist in two of the 22 cities where the service is available: Phoenix and Chicago. However, all Uber users are encouraged to make use of it. Hopefully, this new measure will manage to restore the popularity and safety of the service.
