One of last year’s game will be awarded, and ‘Witcher 3’ and ‘Assassin’s Creed’ are among the nominees for WGA and its sough-after title. It’s a difficult choice, perhaps, but there’s also a clear favorite that might just snag the gold medal with ease. However, it will be a month before the decision is made.
The Writer’s Guild of America (WGA) announced their 2016 Writer’s Guild Awards Videogame Writing Nominations for the game that will be deemed to have the best storyline, dialogue, and overall best writing. It’s a prestigious title to hold in an era where too many video games focus on the spectacle and brand name. See last year’s disappointing ‘Star Wars: Battlefront’.
The ability to create an intricate storyline that keeps the player engaged is at the core of some video games. They’re the ones that keep the community wanting more and, in turn, actually purchasing the titles the second they’re launched. Be it fun, touching, complex, simple, or downright heart-breaking, the story is among the elements that will keep a game close to the heart of gamers and in their minds for long after it’s completed.
The WGA means to award good writing each year, and, for the games of 2015, the nominees are CD Projekt RED’s ‘Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’, Ubisoft’s ‘Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate’, Obsidian Entertainment’s ‘Pillars of Eternity’, and Crystal Dynamics’ ‘Rise of the Tomb Raider’. The competition has started among the four games, and the winner will be chosen on February 13th, 2016.
There are two conditions that the games must fulfill in order to be nominated. For one, they had to have been published between December 1st, 2014 and November 30th, 2015. Anywhere outside of that range, and they would’ve qualified for another year’s edition of the WGA awards.
The second condition is also the reason why certain games with beautifully crafted storylines and writing have been omitted. It stated that the writers working on the games need to be members of the WGA or at least applied to become a member. Otherwise, their titles will not be considered for winning or even being nominated. So, if there is a game that might’ve seen to better writing, it’s possible that it is not in the running because of the aforementioned conditions.
That is also why the runners are mainstream games, with big names and impressive sale numbers.
It’s to be mentioned that the ‘Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’ was also named as the Best Game of the Year 2015, so it’s possible that it’s currently the main contender for WGA’s prize as well.
