After being stranded in the wilderness of the desert for two whole weeks, an elderly couple has been identified by the authorities. Unfortunately, they husband has passed away in the harsh conditions of the wild, but the wife lives on to tell the story.
Dianna Bedwell is 68 years old and she has managed to survive two excruciatingly long weeks in the middle of the desert. Both Mrs. Bedwell and her husband, 79-year old Cecil Knutson, were diabetics. Therefore, it is a miracle that she has survived this great ordeal.
The police have found cups all around their car, because they had been collecting rainwater in order to keep themselves hydrated. The only food that they had these two weeks was that which they had in the car, meaning a few snacks, like pie and some oranges.
The couple had last been seen leaving from the Valley View Casino, according to the information supplied by the surveillance cameras in the area. They were heading for their son’s house in Palm Springs for a Mother’s Day celebration dinner.
Their nightmare began when they decided to take an off-road shortcut and ended up lost in the middle of the desert. Their children reported that they were missing when the couple did not make it to the family dinner and when they were not found in their Orange County home either.
They have been desperately trying to find their parents for these long two weeks. They have even hired a private detective, in the hope that his work will be swifter than that of the police. In the end, it was the authorities who identified the couple’s car in the desert, with the help of off-roaders.
They said that since the car had broken down in a wooded area, it has been impossible for them to locate it by helicopter surveillance. They were finally found 65 miles from San Diego, near a Boy Scout camp in the heart of Los Coyotes Indian Reservation.
While Mrs. Bedwell was in critical shape when she was found, there was nothing that the authorities could do for Cecil Knutson, who had died at least a day prior to their rescue. The exact time and conditions of his death will be established through an autopsy, but the authorities do not suspect foul play for the time being.
The man’s body was found outside, near the car and Mrs. Bedwell was found inside the car, severely dehydrated. She was ultimately airlifted and transported to a hospital, so that she may get the medical attention she desperately needed to survive.
“I got to talk to Mom on the phone. We exchanged I love you s.”, said the family in a post on a social media website immediately after the couple was found. “To be in the middle of nowhere for two weeks is a lot given her age.”, Mrs. Bedwell’s son later told the Orange County Register.
While it is a tragedy that Mr. Knutson passed away after having bravely held out in the wild for so long, it remains a miracle that Dianna Bedwell, a 68-year-old diabetic has managed to survive for two weeks on nothing more than rainwater and some oranges and pie.
