New research show that anti smoking medication could actually help smokers quit the habit. The scientists studied anti smoking drugs like Chantix and found that smokers who took it were more likely to give up smoking.

Michael Siegel, one of the scientists involved in the study and a professor of community health sciences from Boston University, explained the main purpose behind the latest study, saying that drugs like Chantix are beneficial for people who cannot quit smoking by themselves.

By using anti smoking medication, it could help free themselves from the dangerous habit.
According to professor Siegel, anti smoking drugs like Chantix help reduce the nicotine habit in 2-3 months.
The doctors recommend smokers to take the medicine for 12 to 24 weeks in order to see results.

The Chantix anti smoking drug costs $280 and is designed for smokers who are not ready to quit the habit of smoking.
According to the researchers, anti smoking medication can have side effects like nausea, vomiting, headache, gas, insomnia, bad dreams and constipation.

Dr Jon Ebbort, one of the authors of the study, explained that smokers who take anti smoking medication can reduce the number of cigarettes even from the second week of treatment.
According to reports, there are approximately 42 million American smokers and 40% of them are trying to quit at least twice every year, unsuccessfully.

However, a recent study which was published in the journal JAMA showed that the use of medication could aid smokers quit smoking gradually.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that approximately 7 out of 10 smokers in the United States claim that they want to quit their habit completely.

The US Department of Health and Human Services’ recommendation is that in order for people to give up smoking completely, they should set a quit date in the near future and stick to it.

For the study, the scientists recruited more than 1,500 smokers from over 10 countries who claimed they were not willing or not able to stop smoking within the next month. These participants said they were willing to try and quit the habit within the next three months.

Quitting smoking reduces the risk of various deadly diseases like lung cancer, cardiovascular disease or stroke.
