Even though it may sound unexpected and it may still not change obesity rates calorie consumption has dropped in America. This means that Americans have started eating less fast food and sugary beverages. It is the first time significant decline in calorie consumption ever since the government started monitoring this trend more than 40 years ago.
The obesity rates have stopped rising in the case of adults and school-age children and in the case of younger children they have even dropped. Even though over a third of America’s population is considered obese the proportion has stabilized.
According to a report by the US government children with ages between two and five showed a 43 percent decline in obesity rates over the past decade. On average children consume 9 percent less calorie every day. The most significant drop in calorie consumption was observed among children.
It was speculated that American people were forced to spend less money on food because of the recessionary pressure. But experts say that the cause might be simply the fact that people are more aware of how unhealthy is to eat so much food.
The most dramatic change was observed in the consumption of sugary beverages. According to the report the average American has cut down on soda consumption by 25 percent compared to statistics from late 1990s.
The drop in calorie consumption was observed in both African Americans and European Americans. Even though the change varied from group to group the report says that not only families with low monthly income consume less calorie, but families with high monthly income as well.
So this is a proof that people chose to be healthy out of their own volition. This awareness was probably influenced by the increasing number of studies which drew attention to how dangerous obesity is for people’s health. People who are affected by obesity are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes, cancer and heart disease.
Even though this report is encouraging we should not yet celebrate. With one third of the population being obese there is still a long time before Americans will get away from obesity.
