Scientists have identified yet another health benefit brought by drinking coffee regularly. Despite the fact that coffee is everybody’s best friend in the morning, since it almost single-handedly makes waking up possible, it has just been proved to prevent and improve erectile dysfunction.
The study was conducted by the University of Texas and in their research they have obtained data from 4,000 men who were examined for erectile dysfunction and whose 24-hour dietary habits were logged, so as to determine the amount of caffeine they got on a daily basis.
The results pointed out that the subjects who consumed 85 mg and 170 mg of caffeine daily were 42% less prone to develop erectile dysfunction then those who didn’t consume any caffeine. This is the equivalent of two mugs of coffee per day, which seems to be the ideal amount.
And there is good news for the heavy drinkers as well, since the subjects who had a daily intake of 171 mg up to 303 mg were 39% less prone to develop the disease than coffee-free individuals.
According to their findings, caffeine improves blood flow to the penis, since it has the ability to relax the blood vessels of the organ and also the muscles of the cavernous body of the penis.
Furthermore, caffeine has proven effective even in patients who were the perfect candidates for the disease, namely the obese ones, who were also suffering from high blood pressure. Those who drank coffee on a regular basis were proven to be less likely to develop the disease then the ones who did not.
There is a category though that coffee has been proven incapable of helping. Diabetics are known candidates of erectile dysfunction and not even coffee could improve their chances unfortunately, the study revealed.
“Even though we saw a reduction in the prevalence of ED with men who were obese, overweight and hypertensive, that was not true of men with diabetes.”, concluded study author Dr. David Lopez.
Other benefits of drinking coffee every day in a reasonable amount are lower chances of developing cancer, particularly that of the liver and also type-2 diabetes. Moreover, it is an important diuretic and purgative, making it the perfect morning companion.
On the other hand, consuming it in excessive amounts may lead to insomnia and headaches, but far more importantly, to heart disease. It is also strictly frowned upon by the medical community that large amounts of it be consumed by pregnant women, as it may have harmful effects on the child.
Ultimately, even the healthiest of things prove to be harmful when overused. And while coffee has a special place in the hearts and minds of many, it cannot be excluded from this category. Therefore, when consumed with moderation, it brings a lot of benefits with it and when overused, it causes serious health problems.
Dr. Lopez’s study was published in the scientific journal PLOS ONE and has revealed a preventative measure for a disease so feared by the male community, that is so easy and delightful to implement on a long term.
