Coral reefs all over the world are being harmed because of climate change. The fact that temperatures are growing affects the oceans too. The water is getting warmer and there is more acid in the oceans. This doesn’t only affect coral reefs and the marine life. It is going to affect millions of people.
A new research showed that in less than 35 years the effects of the coral reefs deaths are going to affect a lot of people. The first thing that it is going to suffer from this is the economy. In order to show that people are going to be affected by the deaths of the coral reefs, researchers mapped the places in which people need coral reefs the most.
They also identified the reasons why these coral reefs are damaged: the ocean acidification and the warming seas. The countries that are going to be affected by the death of coral reefs are going to be Philippines, Thailand, and Indonesia. They will survive the damage, despite other countries like China, for example.
The biggest problem is that some people depend on these reefs in order to have an income. This means that they will have no income 30 years from now because these reefs might be dead. Also, many countries are depending on the reefs to defend them from storms because they can make a key barrier against these events.
The waves are going to come to the shore with a bigger force because they won’t be stopped by these reefs. This is a serious problem because more than 60 million people live near the sea or ocean and they might even die because of storms or big waves.
Waves are dangerous because they can destroy an entire city if there is a tsunami. People need to be more careful with what they do because it affects them in the long run. Although not many people believe that reefs can have an influence on their life, these little things can affect people. They can affect the economy and the weather.
What is your opinion about coral reefs? Do you think that they are important?
