On Thursday evening a drifter gunman from Alabama killed two women in a Louisiana move theater, namely in Lafayette. Seven other people were injured. After he opened the fire the man killed himself.
The people inside the movie theater were watching the movie Trainwreck. The gunman was identified as John Russell Houser. He was 59 years old. The women killed were Lillian Johnson (33) from Lafayette and Mayci Breaux (21) from Franklin, La.
The Louisiana State Police colonel Michael Edmonson commented on the unfortunate event and the two horrible crimes:
“Don’t lose sight of the fact that these two individuals had a vision, had a name, had a future. It wasn’t to die as they did horribly in this theater here.”
Jim Craft, police chief in Lafayette, explained that the gunman tried to escape from the movie theater after he shot the women, but he was forced to go back inside when the police arrived. Judging by the fact that Houser’s car was parked outside the building near an exit, Craft said that the gunman was planning to run away after the shooting.
Craft also explained why Houser was called a drifter. It seems that the man had recently moved from Phenix City (Alabama) and did not have a criminal record in the last 10-15 years. Previously he had a misdemeanor and arson arrest which most likely involved selling alcohol to an underage person.
The man seems to be estranged from his family. Most recently he worked as a real estate developer in Phenix City for eight months in 2006. In the same year he was refused a pistol permit. In the Louisiana movie theater incident he used a .40 caliber handgun.
When the police examined the motel room where the man was staying they found signs of alcohol consumption. They also discovered disguises such as glasses and wigs.
This incident occurred after other several mass shootings which took place in the United States in the last past weeks. In addition it happened almost three years after twelve people were murdered in a Colorado cinema in Aurora. The shooting took place during a midnight screening of the film The Dar Knight Rises. Besides the twelve people who were killed James Holmes, the gunman, wounded 70 other people.
