The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises seniors to get flu vaccines. There are two options older adults can choose from when it comes to vaccines. The first one is the Fluzone High-Dose and the other one is FLUAD, which was approved recently by FDA.
Seniors are at higher risk and can develop flu complications. There are more than 200 000 people every year who get in the hospital due to influenza and more 80-90 percent are seniors. What you should know is that health officials do not recommend one vaccination over the other. This advice comes especially because there were not studies to compare the two vaccines.
Fluzone high-dose is developed for people over 65 years old. The human body becomes weaker with age and older people are more in danger than the younger ones. This vaccine has a higher dose of antigen, which should help individuals to be better protected against the flu. Even though this vaccine proved to be efficient, it still has some side effects, such as pain or muscles aches. However, most people did not have any side effects after they got the Fluzone high-dose.
FLUAD was approved in the United States in November 2015. It is available for the 2016-2017 flu season. Its secret weapon is the MF50 adjuvant, which is supposed to be more efficient against the flu. It is the first adjuvanted vaccine used in the United States. FLUAD was first approved in 1997 and it is used in 38 countries. What is very important about this vaccine is that it can be used only by people older than 65 years old. Moreover, it should not be used by those who have allergies. It is also can have side-effects, but it is considered to be safe for the older people.
Flu vaccines are important for seniors and the same thing can be said for pneumonia vaccines. Almost 1 million Americans get in the hospital due to pneumonia and 50 000 die because of it. There are vaccines to protect the older adults, such as Prevnar 13 or Pneumovax 23. They are efficient when it comes to protection and have different effects. Patients are able to get the vaccines at different times.
CDC recommends all seniors to pay more attention to their health during this period. Flu vaccines can make a difference in their lives.
