Google has added 900 illnesses to its health condition feature, all in the hope of keeping people accurately informed about disease.
Nowadays, when people get sick, the first thing that most of them do is to Google search their symptoms or the illness that they think they might have, so that they can make a quick and free self-diagnosis.
While doctors have been advising people to stop self-diagnosing themselves and go to a medical clinic instead, people have kept on Googling their symptoms for years and years now.
The problem with taking sessions with Dr. Internet is that there is no certainty that the information is entirely accurate. Furthermore, when people read the descriptions of the diseases that they think they have, they start believing that they actually have some of the symptoms that they read about and when they finally go see a doctor and find out that they have overreacted, they end up distrusting the doctor, rather than the internet.
So Google decided to make the best of this modern habit of Google searching symptoms and they had a team of doctors improve the quality of the information delivered by the search engine, so that people at least get the correct information when they look up their health conditions online.
Furthermore, the doctors pointed out the need for adding an easy print option, so that patients can actually come in with the information that they found online, so that the doctors can know exactly what the patients refer to when they start talking about their symptoms.
Moreover, this way the doctors can point out the information that is inaccurate in the particular case of the patient and also offer an explanation why.
Google has added more than 900 new illnesses to its search engine and the information comes out in a Knowledge Graph as the top result, followed by other websites that can offer information. The Knowledge Graph will include information regarding symptoms, causes of the disease and possible treatments.
The aim of this new health feature is to let people know when it is time to go see a doctor. Google has included a multitude of neglected tropical diseases in its new additions, so that people can get better informed on those as well.
It remains to be seen what this improved quality of service will be able to accomplish, but making sure that people get the best possible information when they look up their symptoms online is definitely the best course of action in the matter of Dr. Internet.
